What is a "Mobile Friendly Site"?
Those persons, mainly everyone, who own a PDA or cell phone with web access will be looking up websites... sure they can find your existing website on their phone but they will not be able to see it in their window "to fit" AND the graphics on your existing site will take too long to download and will look out of place. A "mobile friendly" website will be a slimmed down version of your existing site so that the user's experience on your mobile website will be much more pleasant.

How many people are looking at websites on their mobile devices? At the end of 2006, according to Informa’s Mobile Market Status 2007 , there were 2.7 billion mobile phone users

People on mobile phones that are surfing the net are looking for quick info. It is not the same as surfing the net for leisure. Mobile surfers are in a hurry and only have time for the most important pieces of info - they don't care about the fluff text. If you look at mobile sites, they are made up of the logo/company name, a few links to other pages, up to 3 small paragraphs (paragraph meaning up to 2 sentences long) and perhaps one graphic. The screen size is about 320 px width which is not much when listin information regarding your company and services. Mobile friendly means stripping basically EVERYTHING off the page and leaving the bare essentials - and fitting it into a 320px screen size.
In order to have a mobile site, you must purchase a .mobi domain name and create the necessary pages that can be viewed on the mobile site. An example is www.ert2go.mobi. We then set up a switcher program that detects where the user is coming from (i.e. PC or Mobile Device) and directs them to the appropriate website (i.e. if coming from a PC the switcher program will direct them to the .com website and if the user is coming from a mobile device the switcher will direct them to the .mobi website). The cost to have ERT set this up for you is $100 per mobile page plus $100 switcher fee. | |
